History of National DNA Day

The first National DNA Day was held in 2003, declared by the US Congress as a one-time celebration to commemorate these breakthroughs. However, annual celebrations became the norm, spearheaded by the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI).

Though initially a US holiday, April 25th is now recognized as International DNA Day or World DNA Day by many organizations around the world.

National DNA Day Activities

There are many fun and educational activities you can do to celebrate National DNA Day, which is on April 25th. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Make a model of DNA. There are many different ways to make a model of DNA, depending on your age and interests. You can use candy, pipe cleaners, or even Legos! Here are instructions for making a candy DNA model:
    • You’ll need red licorice for the sugar-phosphate backbone, green and yellow gummy bears for the adenine and thymine bases, and blue and orange gummy bears for the guanine and cytosine bases.
    • To assemble the DNA model, cut the licorice into short pieces. Then, connect the gummy bears together in pairs, using the complementary base pairing rules: adenine (A) always pairs with thymine (T), and guanine (G) always pairs with cytosine (C).
    • Once you have a few strands of gummy bear bases, connect them to the licorice backbone by poking the licorice through the centers of the gummies.
  • Learn about DNA extraction. DNA extraction is the process of isolating DNA from a cell. You can do a simple DNA extraction at home using strawberries! Here are instructions for a strawberry DNA extraction:
    • Mash up some strawberries in a zip-lock bag.
    • Add some salt and dish soap to the strawberries and mash it up some more.
    • Strain the mixture through a coffee filter into a new cup.
    • Add rubbing alcohol to the strawberry mixture in the cup. The DNA will rise to the top of the mixture as a white, stringy substance.
  • Watch an educational video about DNA. There are many great educational videos about DNA available online. The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) has a number of videos on their website that you can watch.
  • Read a book about DNA. There are many great books about DNA available for all ages. Here are a few suggestions:
    • “The Double Helix” by James D. Watson: This is a classic book about the discovery of the structure of DNA.
    • “The Secret of Life” by Bill Bryson: This book is a more general overview of DNA and genetics.
    • “DNA Is Like a Code” by Debbie & Michael Carroll: This is a great book for kids that explains DNA in a simple and easy-to-understand way.
