International Women's Day

International Women’s Day 2024 (IWD) is celebrated on March 8th every year. It’s a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender equality.

Here’s what you need to know about IWD 2024:

Theme: The theme for IWD 2024 is “Inspire Inclusion“. This theme calls for action to create a world where all women and girls feel included, valued, and empowered.

Key areas for action: The UN Women has identified five key areas for action to achieve gender equality:

  • Investing in women: A human rights issue. Time is running out to achieve gender equality by 2030. There is an urgent need to invest in women and girls, including in education, health, and economic opportunities.
  • Ending poverty. The COVID-19 pandemic and other crises have pushed millions of women and girls into poverty. We need to invest in programs that help women and girls lift themselves out of poverty.
  • Implementing gender-responsive financing. Governments and businesses need to allocate more resources to programs that promote gender equality.
  • Shifting to a green economy and care society. We need to build economies that are sustainable and equitable for all, including women and girls.
  • Supporting feminist change-makers. We need to support the work of feminist activists and organizations who are working to make the world a more just and equal place for all.

How you can get involved:

There are many ways you can get involved in International Women’s Day 2024:

  • Attend an IWD event. There are events happening all over the world to celebrate IWD. You can find a list of events on the IWD website.
  • Donate to a charity that supports women and girls. There are many charities that work to promote gender equality. Consider making a donation to support their work.
  • Speak out about gender equality. Use your voice to raise awareness about the challenges that women and girls face and advocate for change.
  • Challenge your own biases. We all have unconscious biases. Take some time to reflect on your own biases and how they might be impacting your behavior.
  • Celebrate the women in your life. Take some time to celebrate the achievements of the women in your life, both big and small.

Together, we can make a difference and create a world where all women and girls are included, valued, and empowered.

International Women’s Day 2024 Theme United Nations

The theme for International Women’s Day 2024, which is celebrated on March 8th, is “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress.” This theme aligns with the priority theme for the UN 68th Commission on the Status of Women (CSW 68) and will examine pathways to greater economic inclusion for women and girls everywhere.

The theme recognizes that, despite progress, women face significant obstacles to achieve equal participation in the economy. These obstacles include:

  1. Gender pay gap: Women around the world are still paid less than men for the same work.
  2. Lack of access to education and training: Women are often less likely than men to have access to quality education and training, which limits their job opportunities.
  3. Discrimination and harassment: Women are often discriminated against and harassed in the workplace, which can make it difficult for them to advance their careers.
  4. Unpaid care work: Women are often responsible for a disproportionate amount of unpaid care work, such as childcare and housework, which can limit their time and energy for paid work.

International Women’s Day 2024 Theme “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress” calls for action to address these obstacles and invest in women’s economic empowerment. This includes:

  • Investing in education and training for women and girls.
  • Promoting equal pay for equal work.
  • Providing access to childcare and other care services.
  • Preventing and responding to violence against women.
  • Empowering women to participate in decision-making.
